Who can benefit from the ManulifeMONEY+ Visa Infinite* Card?

Welcome bonus

ManulifeMONEY+ Visa Infinite* Card welcome bonus

The ManulifeMONEY+ Visa Infinite* credit card does not offer a cash back or points welcome bonus. Instead, it offers two other sign-up bonuses:

  • $139 annual fee is waived for the first year
  • 1.99% interest on balance transfers for the first six months

Those bonuses may seem underwhelming but the annual fee waiver essentially means you can test out Manulife Bank credit cards and see if the premium option is right for you. If not, just downgrade to the ManulifeMoney+ Visa Platinum* with no annual fee before year two and avoid that $139 charge.

How to earn rewards

How to earn rewards with the ManulifeMONEY+ Visa Infinite* Card

The ManulifeMONEY+ Visa Infinite* credit card offers enhanced cash back rewards to try and match its $139 annual fee. Cardholders earn the following cash back on eligible purchases:

  • 3% cash back at grocery stores
  • 2% cash back on travel (flights, hotels, Airbnb and cruises)
  • 1% cash back on everything else

The travel category is generous and lets you earn rewards on the usual things you’re likely to spend heavily on when travelling, and the addition of Airbnb is a nice nod to the fast-growing travel trend.

Both the 3% and 2% back categories are capped at $25,000 in annual spending, with cardholders earning the flat-rate 1% back thereafter. A cap might sound frustrating but unless you spend more than $2,500 per month on groceries, you’re unlikely to notice.

How to redeem

How to redeem

Redeeming rewards with the ManulifeMONEY+ Visa Infinite* Card is incredibly simple. In fact, you don't have to do anything at all. Cash back rewards will be automatically posted to your account four times a year: in March, June, September and December. It's important to note that cash back rewards don’t contribute to your minimum payment. Instead, it offsets the total balance and new statement balance periods.

Key benefits

Key benefits of the ManulifeMONEY+ Visa Infinite* Card

  • No annual fee for the first year: The ManulifeMoney+ Visa Infinite* Card provides rewards and insurance far beyond the no annual fee version of the card. As a result you can expect an annual fee with the Visa Infinite of $139. But Manulife Bank waives that annual fee for the first year meaning you can enjoy the versatile cash back, enhanced travel insurance protections and find out if the card is right for you without the $139 fee for year one.
  • Up to 3% cash back on groceries: The card also provides enhanced cash back versus the no annual fee ManulifeMoney+ Visa Platinum* Card. Cardholders earn 3% back on groceries up to the first $25,000 in annual spending, 2% back on the first $25,000 spent annually on travel (flights, hotels, Airbnb and cruises) and 1% back on all other purchases.
  • $5,000 starting credit limit: Manulife credit cards come with at least a $5,000 minimum credit limit. That’s a healthy starting limit for a premium rewards credit card of this type; plus, it’s only the minimum and your credit limit could be even higher to start.
Insurance coverage

ManulifeMONEY+ Visa Infinite* Card insurance coverage

Manulife credit cards come with robust travel and purchase protections built-in. Beyond the basics of purchase protection and extended warranty Visa Infinite* cardholders can anticipate valuable insurance coverage for everything from bags and flight delay coverage to emergency accident insurance:

  • Extended warranty: 1 year
  • Purchase protection: 90 days
  • Trip interruption: $2,000
  • Flight delay: $500
  • Baggage delay: $500
  • Rental car: $65,000
  • Travel accident: $500,000
  • Emergency medical term: 15 days (over 65: 3 days)

Optional balance protection

Manulife also provides optional balance protection insurance. This coverage protects you from hardships with paying your credit card bill should illness, injury or unemployment impact your ability to pay on time. This coverage costs $0.99 for every $100 of your monthly total average daily balance.

Extra benefits

Extra benefits of the ManulifeMONEY+ Visa Infinite* Card

  • Visa Zero-liability in case of fraud on your account
  • Visa Infinite benefits including 24/7 personal concierge, access to more than 900 properties through the Visa Global Hotels Collection, exclusive access to once-in-a-lifetime experiences and culinary explorations and more

The BMO CashBack® World Elite® Mastercard is an extremely impressive cash back credit card (and one of our favourite grocery cards). That’s because it earns 5% cash back up to $500 spent per month, with other bonus categories including transit (4% back on up to $300 spent per month) gas (3% back on up to $300 per month), recurring bills (2% back on up to $500 per month) and unlimited 1% on everything else.

We estimate the BMO CashBack® World Elite® Mastercard provides a first-year value of $950 and an on-going rewards value of $570 per year based on the average Canadians’ spending habits from Statistics Canada. Still, the $120 annual fee (waived for the first year) and strict income and credit eligibility requirements may deter some.

Is it worth it?

Is the ManulifeMONEY+ Visa Infinite* Card worth it?

The ManulifeMONEY+ Visa Infinite* Card isn’t one of the bigger names in the Canadian credit card space, but it provides plenty of value for cardholders in its first year. The $120 annual fee doesn’t really provide a ton of value when you consider the rewards on offer but the first-year annual fee waiver makes this a card you can try to see what you like. Don’t like what you see? Just downgrade to the no annual fee ManulifeMONEY+ Visa Platinum* Card and you’ll be fine.
