TD is one of Aeroplan’s oldest credit card partners and it seems that relationship is set to continue since TD, along with CIBC and Air Canada, formalized an agreement to purchase Aeroplan. This gives a greater sense of stability to the Aeroplan program’s future, so cardholders can continue to earn Aeroplan points without anxiety about what will happen to the points’ value down the road.

The TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum* Card is TD’s entry-level Aeroplan card, and it may appeal to those who are excluded from upper-tier Aeroplan cards due to restrictive income requirements and prohibitively high annual fees.

How Aeroplan works

Aeroplan is one of the most popular travel rewards programs in Canada and is the official loyalty program of Air Canada. Since Air Canada is a member of Star Alliance, you can use your points on any of their partner airlines as long as you book your flights through the Aeroplan website or via their customer service line.  Points are redeemed for flights based on demand and availability.

When you use your Aeroplan points to redeem a flight, many airlines still charge taxes, fees and surcharges which can add up to quite a bit.

Generally speaking, 1 Aeroplan point has an accepted value of $0.02 CAD per point. You can easily get that value when booking flights within North America and Asia. A one-way, short-haul flight will cost 7,500 Aeroplan points, so you could fly from Montreal to Newfoundland or Vancouver to Yukon. Alternatively, you could redeem 12,500 Aeroplan points for a one-way long-haul flight such as Toronto to Los Angeles, which has a value of about $300. Flying to Europe seems to be of low value when you consider how many points it requires and the additional fees you’ll need to pay.

Drawbacks

The major drawback of this card is the travel insurance. Although you get some basic travel insurance included, it’s not very much and it doesn’t even include travel medical. This wouldn’t be a big deal for a card with no annual fee, but you’re paying $89 a year to hold this card.

Is it worth It?

Despite the drawbacks, the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum* Card is still a good fit for people who want to collect Aeroplan points but don’t meet the minimum income requirement for some of the more lucrative cards. The sign-up bonus is worth more than the $89 annual fee, and the card is particularly valuable for those who frequently shop with Aeroplan partners.
