When do boxing day sales start?
While Boxing Day falls on December 26, many retailers now offer extended Boxing Week sales and even begin offering promotional prices in the days leading up to Boxing Day. Some retailers start their sales on the 24th once stores close for Christmas, while others might start even earlier. If you’re eyeing a specific product, check the retailer’s website to find out when their particular sales begin.
For example, this year Best Buy is offering a “Boxing Day Pricing Now” promotion, in which certain items have been on sale throughout December at their lowest price, with the promise of a refund of the difference in the event that the price drops further after you’ve made your purchase.
What should you do if a Boxing Day deal is sold out?
Boxing Day is often seen as separate from other promotions retailers have throughout the year, which means their usual company policies like raincheques and price matches might not apply. It’s best to check with a retailer directly to ask what happens if the item you want is sold out.
If an item is sold out on Boxing Day and the store can’t offer a raincheque or price match for when it’s back in stock, keep an eye on that store’s January sales. They might have the same offers in January when people are already shopped-out, so it doesn’t mean the discounted price is lost forever!
To avoid any disappointment, here’s a Boxing Day online shopping tip I recommend: instead of waiting until the day itself to begin browsing deals, decide what you want ahead of time and add those items to your cart online. When the Boxing Day sale starts, the promotional pricing will be automatically applied to items in your cart, allowing you to check out and beat the rush of online shoppers.
Hacks for saving more this Boxing Day
Zeroing in on the best sale is only half the Boxing Day battle; the other half is priming yourself to pocket even more change at the register. We’ll let you in on our secrets for going way south of a Boxing Day sale’s advertised prices.
Gift yourself a discount
Pause: is this your first time hounding Boxing Day sales, or is it a confirmed ritual? If you’re nodding at the latter, the next time your partner/family/friends ask you what you want for your birthday or Christmas, tell them to skip the guesswork of finding you the perfect item and to instead just give you a gift card to your favourite retailer.
Or take matters into your own hands by dusting off any unused rewards points you might have lying around. A number of major rewards programs—like Amex Membership Rewards and Aeroplan—allow you to convert points into gift cards for the likes of Best Buy, Walmart, and Amazon.ca. And the rate you get per redeemed point is usually cost-effective.
You can quickly check our Loyalty Program Bible to see if your rewards points can be converted into gift cards for your favourite stores.
Explore cash-saving apps and websites
Certain cash back apps, like Ampli and Rakuten, allow you to shop through their portals to get further discounts in the form of cash back on a percentage of your purchases. If you plan on doing your Boxing Day shopping primarily online, using these apps at online retailers can earn you a chunk of change.
If you prefer not to use an app, there are also a number of websites that you can use to earn cash back on your purchases.
Break out the right plastic
Your current credit card might pay out oodles of cash back or rewards on everyday spending categories like groceries or gas, but don’t be surprised if the rate you get for your Boxing Day purchases is comparatively puny. Most of the stores with big Boxing Day sales are classified by credit cards as electronic, warehouse, or wholesale retailers, where you’ll likely earn back at your card’s base rate. Refer to our list of Canada’s best cash back credit cards to see which will give you a high ‘everything’ earn rate for your Boxing Day buys—1.5% or more is quite good for a base cash back rate.
You can learn more about how credit cards categorize retailers by reading our guide to Merchant Category Codes in Canada.
A bargain bonanza
While the culture of Boxing Day has changed significantly in the past two years, its tradition of killer sales fortunately seems here to stay. December 26 remains one of the most fiscally savvy days to buy big-ticket appliances, electronics, and furniture.
But don’t get too intoxicated by the bargains, lest you end up with a holiday hangover when your credit bills come due. A great sale is only great if you can afford it!
